Your Reddit “GEO” Strategy Suddenly Became Worthless

#SEO#AI

If you spent the last two quarters trying to seed Reddit threads for AI search visibility, you had a bad week. From July 18 to August 7, 2026, Reddit held a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT Search citations. But suddenly, Promptwatch measured a small drop on August 8 and a larger one on August 14 that pulled Reddit’s share below 1%. The August 14 to 17 average was 0.5%, an 86% drop. Search Engine Land reported the same trend.

It’s not just Reddit

OpenAI has no incentive to let marketing teams hack its product. Every tactic built on slipping promotional content into user-generated platforms is eventually doomed. A separate measurement by Petra Labs in mid-August found YouTube citations down 88%, TikTok down 72%, LinkedIn down 36%, and Facebook down 28%. Petra Labs put Reddit’s decline at 81%, while Promptwatch put it at 86%. Petra Labs also found the Reddit decline held uniformly across industries, thread ages, and subreddit sizes.

The test for an SEO tactic is whether the search platform wants it to happen

Ask whether the platform is trying to surface this behavior, or if it just has not stopped you yet. Genuine recommendations by real customers survive because they are exactly what the search engine is trying to find. An astroturfed thread on a subreddit is a temporary hack. But when you exploit a flaw in someone else’s product, they eventually fix their product.

Google’s AI optimization guide told everyone to stop chasing inauthentic mentions back in May. The SEO industry read that as a Google-specific rule. But it’s better read as a plain description of where every major AI platform is heading.

You cannot see the expiration date from the outside

There is a chance this specific drop reverses. Promptwatch stated that a shift in ChatGPT’s source selection is the obvious candidate, but a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so the size of the drop should be treated as provisional. Nobody knows whether this is a permanent algorithmic shift or just Reddit renegotiating a licensing deal with OpenAI behind closed doors.

That uncertainty is the entire argument against buying this kind of work. You have zero control over backroom licensing fights and no visibility into when a platform will patch its vulnerabilities. Getting dumber on purpose keeps your attention on the few things that matter. Buying a tactic with an invisible expiration date wastes money you could have spent on assets you actually own.

ChatGPT moved its trust to brand websites and review platforms

Those missing citations went somewhere. Petra Labs found the links migrated to brand websites and dedicated review platforms, and overall brand visibility inside ChatGPT responses stayed largely intact. ChatGPT still recommends brands. Your budget belongs on your own site and on earning genuine third-party coverage. That offsite work was already your biggest lever. The Reddit strategy you bought in July was worthless by August 14.
