I’ve never worked as a school teacher, but I think it has to be the hardest job in the world if you take it seriously. I mean, just imagine: You’re responsible for making sure 2 dozen mostly uninterested children learn and retain a year’s worth of information.

• The goal for many teachers is to simple get kids to learn something just long enough so that they can be tested, graded, and then shuffled on to the next topic.

How do you learn best? Do you do well with memorization? Or are you more of a conceptual person? Do you need concrete examples to understand a concept? Do you need to see something written out in a diagram or can you read about it and get the concepts that way? We need to show children that people learn differently. If we don’t, we risk a child coming to the conclusion that they are incapable of learning. When really it could be the most natural thing in the world for them to learn new information if only they had the opportunity to learn it differently. This applies to the workforce as well. As a sales manager, one of the challenges is coming up with new ways to explain the same things, so salespeople with different learning types can receive the training too. If people could develop their own learning skills.
